PSP outsells rival in Japan |
|
New figures have revealed that the PSP is continuing to outsell its rival handheld console, the Nintendo DS, in Japan. The PlayStation Portable has outsold Nintendo’s DS in Japan for the second week running, as sales of the portable gaming system continue to climb on a weekly basis.
The PSP sold 75,912 units for the week ended February 10, beating out the DS for a second week, which sold 60,464 in the same period.
Elsewhere, hardware sales for remaining consoles declined from the previous week, with the PlayStation 3 selling 23,985 units, down from almost 42,000 the week before.
Despite this, the next-generation console continued to outsell its main rival, the Xbox 360, by a pretty substantial margin, as did the PlayStation 2, which totalled just over 11,000 units.

No PSP rival from Apple yet |
|
A senior development source has claimed that although there are rumours suggesting that Apple is set to launch a games device, the industry should not expect the company to make a move just yet.
The Industry Standard posted an interesting article recently discussing the possibility of Apple releasing a mobile gaming platform. According to the writer, the circumstantial evidence points to Apple trying its luck with gaming once again. And while I think the company may want to do just that, it should attempt to make its way into the console market,” Don Reisinger writes for CNET.

PSP extended battery reviewed |
|
Although the new PSP Extended Battery Kit may be an "awkward eyesore", one reviewer has praised the device.
Sony has released the Extended Life Battery Kit in Japan, which includes a bulkier 2200 mAh battery along with a matching cover. The kit is currently available in Japan with covers in colors that match the various PSP models.
Despite some noticeable inconveniences, one reviewer wrote: "The battery is noticeably thicker than the standard one that comes with the system at the time of purchase, and as a result, it gives the player much more playtime with the system, no matter which features you use—games, music, video, whatever."

PSP concept design revealed |
|
A mock-up of a possible next-generation PSP has been unveiled on the internet, attracting a great deal of interest from the gaming community.
Flickr user BluezPS has set the internets on fire today by posting renders of a concept PSP design, apparently of his or her own creation. iPhone-esque when closed, the design is both incredibly sexy and in keeping with Sony's general design aesthetics, so much so that if BluezPS isn't already on the Sony payroll, he certainly should be.
