PSP 2 Rumours Firm

Both the rumour and the official buzz for the PSP brand are ramping up. For most of its short life the PSP has played second fiddle to the all conquering Nintendo DS, and has even struggled to get backing from its creator Sony. Both marketing and support wise.

Well both those aspects changed recently when rumours of a UMD (the Universal Media Disc used as a media for games and movies) free PSP in the pipeline started traversing the internet. This week according to Eurogamer sources close to Sony, the PSP-4000 is deep into development. The next iteration will feature a slimmer design due to the loss of UMD drive, a sliding control covering screen,  with the screen ‘closed’ most of the controls will be covered, but the entire face of the console will not be covered.  This will mean that the new PSP will have a significantly skinnier form factor.

"The screen is basically the same as the one in the PSP 3000 - except it slides." Said the Sony development source. There will be a new emphasis for titles that utilise the shoulder buttons, as these will still be available whilst the screen is in its closed state, according to the Eurogamer report, developers have been approached to plan games designed for shoulder button input only. Still no official word, dates or prices at the point of publication.

Sony pledges to ‘reinvigorate’ PSP in ‘09

‘Significant’ NEW titles are heading to the PSP this year that will revitalise the format and attract new consumers, Sony has said. Now over four years-old, the PSP has steadily established itself throughout the current generation, selling over 40 million units globally – 3.2m of them in the UK.

But software sales have been less consistent. In GfK-ChartTrack’s monthly report for January, the format accounted for just 3.6 per cent of the UK software market in unit terms – a stark contrast to Japan, where 2008’s biggest title was PSP game Monster Hunter.

UK product manager Claire Backhouse said that comparable titles are on the way over here – a number of them unannounced – that can help turn around the format’s current standing. “This year we are also launching a host of significant PlayStation IPs on the PSP platform, the first being Resistance Retribution, which will help drive sales,” Backhouse said.

N+ leaps onto DS and PSP this April News

Atari plans to spring DS and PSP versions of N+ on us this April. The handheld games had previously been restricted to the US, where they were welcomed by solid critical reception.

N+ casts players as a stick-man ninja who must leap around collecting coins and find a way to reach the level exit, all while avoiding numerous obstacles or falling too far and splatting. Gets really rather taxing.

New bits for DS and PSP include co-operative multiplayer and level sharing over ad-hoc and wireless networks. There's a level editor, then, obviously, plus downloadable extras and regular multiplayer that uses cartridge sharing.

The Next PSP to Support Game Recording?

The handheld gaming market is a very tough one, with customers split between the top two dedicated game consoles, the Nintendo DS and the PSP. While the DS rules the casual gaming market with an iron fist, as it has a huge library of games in which almost anyone can find something that they're interested in, the PSP, at least according to Sony, is the choice of hardcore gamers who want a great handheld experience.

But despite being targeted at dedicated gamers, the PSP, hasn't really enjoyed the huge sales that the Japanese company was hoping for, which forced Sony to lower its estimates on the unit sales for the last year. This recent downturn in popularity and units shipped has prompted a lot of speculation in the gaming industry about a possible new version of the handheld console.

While the most recent version of the PSP,, the PSP-3000, has been launched only a few months ago, it seems that a lot of analysts are predicting that Sony will launch either another version, the PSP-4000, or even a new model altogether, the PSP2, which would feature a variety of new improvements. But although various executives have denied such rumors, there's just no stopping them.
