Protoype of $100 laptop released

A prototype of the so-called '$100 laptop' made by the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) organisation has been produced.

The OLPC is aiming to make over five million of the devices and sell them to the governments of developing nations so that children of the third world will be able to own their own PC.

Massachussettes-based OLPC will not make the $100 laptop available for individual sale, rather it will be released through government programmes.

OLPC stated: "The first 15 A-Test boards were successfully assembled and tested and are en route to OLPC's facility in Cambridge.

"Now 500 developer boards are being assembled in Shanghai and will be shipped as they are tested."

Incorporating a tough rubberised exterior, and a hand crank to generate its own power, the laptop will feature a 500 Megahertz processor, 500 MB of Flash laptop memory and four USB ports.

The laptops have swivel and tilt screens and come in several vibrant colours, including orange, blue and yellow.

Interest in the laptop has already been shown by the governments of Thailand and Brasil.

PSP to guide hikers

PSP owners wishing to explore the great outdoors will soon be able to download information and hiking routes from outdoor and adventure media company Adventure Crossing.

The company has launched iHikes, a service that allows users to download video segments costing 50p each to a handheld mobile device, including video iPods, PCs, laptops and of course PSPs.

Segments will feature guides to national parks, advice on proper gear and clothing, wildlife, wildflowers and information on where to camp.

Adventure Crossing said: "iHikes provides content for the seasoned backcountry traveler and the first-time park visitor, including families.

"With over 17 million PSPs sold worldwide, this website provides an easy and convenient vehicle to utilise handheld devices for pre-trip planning and travel reference."

This service is the first of its kind and iHikes does give users the option of a membership costing £10 annually.

Containing 150 video segments, the video library includes over 70 trail guides.

Tom Cruise bans PSP

Mission Impossible star Tom Cruise has banned his two older children from playing any kind of video game – including the Sony PSP.

Television, but not movies, is also banned in the eccentric star's house, as is any reading material pertaining to video games or game consoles.

Mr Cruise recently had a baby girl, named Suri, with new wife and ex Dawson's Creek-star Katie Holmes.

The new baby is an addition to Cruise's two adopted children, Isabella, 13 and Connor, 11.

In an interview with Ireland's Evening Echo, Cruise said: "The kids have no computer games, and absolutely no television, none.

"They can listen to music and read just about any book they want and they can choose the movies they want to see on the weekends, within reason."

In addition, the star's children will be home-schooled in Scientology, the chosen religion of Cruise and his new wife.

Scientology is the brainchild of science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard and has proven popular with many of Hollywood's stars including John Travolta and Kirstie Alley.

PSP camera at E3

Among the many awe-inspiring revelations and debuts at the now past E3 convention in LA was the digital camera add-on for the PSP.

Rumours about the camera had been prevalent, but details rare, before E3.

Scheduled for release at an unknown date later this year, the camera is silver and attaches to a USB port on the bottom of the PSP.

Tech website Joystiq has published pictures of the camera, engendering comment and speculation on everything from when it will be released to its effect on the PSP battery life.

Sony has been unforthcoming about the details of the camera; however PSPworld.com has revealed that the camera will be a stock unit that is being used in certain Ericsson phones.

The website said that the camera will allow gamers to stream video to the PlayStation 3 and will use the PSP's Wi-Fi support.

Taking still photos with the camera will also be an option according to PSPworld.com.

Capcom promotes PSP game with bikini

Thieves who have their beady little eyes on a Sony PSP had best think again.

The sim FinderLove for the PSP will focus on three different fictional girls, and each game sold in Japan will include a bikini suited to the dimensions of either Hara Fumina, Hoshino Aki or Risa Kudo.

The bikinis will also be of the same colour that each girl wears in the game, white, yellow and orange, or pink and blue.

Capcom has stated that the bikinis "can't actually be worn".

FinderLove allows the player to interact with and take pictures of the girl featured in their edition of the game.

The player can then exchange the pictures taken with friends.

Capcom has released a gamut of PSP games of late, many of which they put on display at the ongoing E3 convention in LA, its Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded, a retrospective of classic PS2 games.

Sony announces PSP Spot

The latest mouth-watering gaming innovation unveiled by Sony at the E3 convention in Los Angeles is the PSP 'Spot', a small device which allows gamers to download content from almost anywhere.

The PlayStation Spot can download items such as songs, video, movie trailers, and images and will be launched primarily in western Europe, including the UK, France, Germany and Spain.

"Through the PlayStation Spot network, the PSP owner will gain free access to a rich collection of diverse content in conventional, but also the most unpredictable, locations", said Stephane Hareau, SCEE's senior brand manager for PSP.

"With content specifically selected for the event, venue or occasion, this will really add to the unique entertainment experience enjoyed with PSP."

Over 60,000 industry professionals have so far attended the E3 convention this year according to the Entertainment Software Association.

E3 2007 will take place in LA from May 16th - May 18th.
