Sony is optimistic that the popularity of UMD movies will see a significant boost with the launch of the new slimline PSP in September. The company expects that the lighter, more portable design of the updated PSP model will make it even more appealing for users to watch movies on the go. By expanding the selection of UMD titles and highlighting the convenience and quality of the format, Sony aims to strengthen the appeal of UMD movies among PSP users. The executive expressed confidence that the slimline PSP, combined with a strong lineup of UMD releases, will drive further growth in this segment, reinforcing UMD as a key component of the PSP’s multimedia capabilities.

PSP 'not in battle' with the DS Lite |
|
Sony does not intend to pitch its PlayStation Portable (PSP) in competition against Nintendo's DS Lite, games experts claim.
Despite the PSP price cut announced earlier this week, the two devices have different things to offer their players and will not be entering a "sales battle", an analyst at Wedbush Morgan told GamesIndustry.biz.
Michael Pachter said: "I don't think Sony will 'beat' the DS, nor do I think that they aspire to do so."
He added that while the DS resembles a "souped-up GBA", the PSP is a miniature PS2, concluding that the rivalry between the two is a construction of the media.
An analyst at IDC, Billy Pidgeon, stated that the PSP is not competing with the DS Lite but is "bringing in the core console demographic to handhelds". Following the price cut next month, Sony's PSP will retail at £129.99 in Europe and $169.99 (£85) in North America.

PSP price drop in the UK |
|
Sony has announced that the price of the PlayStation Portable (PSP) is set to drop by £50 in the UK.
Following a 20 per cent price cut for the device in the US, the group has decided to reduce the cost of the PSP to £129.99 from £149.99, as well as cutting the European cost to €169.99 (£116).
Ray Maguire, UK director of Sony Computer Entertainment, said: "PSP is unique and is constantly evolving.
"It offers the widest palette of mobile entertainment, from gaming to video, music, photos and internet."
He added that the possibility of connecting to PS3 wirelessly makes the PSP "more relevant than ever."
Meanwhile, five new Platinum game titles are set to be released, including Ridge Racer 2, Moto GP, Tekken: Dark Resurrection, Killzone: Liberation and LocoRoco, all priced at the budget cost of £14.99.
The price change will come into effect on May 4th.

Epic skate movie released on UMD |
|
The best-selling skateboard movie every made has just been released on UMD for the PSP.
Tony Hawk Presents The End is filmed in realistic 35mm film and features hundreds of jaw-dropping tricks, some of which have never been captured on film.
Blistering tracks by the Beastie Boys, Warren G, The Propellorheads and Rob Zombie play throughout, making for a compelling, fast, joyride of a movie.
Directed by Jamie Mosberg and of course featuring the iconic Tony Hawk, the movie features almost as many explosions and chimps chugging beer as it does tricks.
Chock full of names like Steve Berra, Ali Cairns, Keith Kirchart, Bucky Lasek, Willy Santos, and Rick McCrank, The End features quality skating from start to finish.
Tony Hawk seems to have been around since the universe began, that is, before skating was considered at all cool.
In fact, the easy-going Californian pretty much made skating cool single-handedly and since then has formed a skating empire worth millions of dollars.
So the fact that he is at the helm of The End speaks volumes and makes this particular UMD a must-have for all skating PSP owners.

New gaming case gets to the core of the issue |
|
The newly released Leather Core Case from Core Gamer, for the PSP, is surely the most versatile and capacious case on the market.
As well as the PSP itself, the case is capable of holding 10 UMD discs, UMD cases, a USB 2.0 cable, memory stick duo cards, an external battery, earphones, car charger, power adapter, game manuals and a kitchen sink.
An clever flip-open feature on the top allows one to access the PSP for movie viewing, without removing it from the case.
Foam dividers in the case allow one to customise storage functions and set up the internal compartments how one wishes.
As the name suggests, the case is made of luxurious yet tough black leather, that allows it to be carried sans embarrassment.
The Leather Core Case costs about £20 and is available online.
A PSP accessory that can also be carried in the case is the newly released In-Line remote from Logic3.
